Silver diamine fluoride is now available for use in New Zealand. This product is a welcome addition to the dental tool kit. This webinar series is designed to explore SDF, its applications and its potential to enhance patient outcomes. The series will explore the background and science behind SDF along with the clinical applications across different population groups, providing the knowledge and confidence to implement SDF into your clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

This webinar will focus on the new NZ guidelines for the use of SDF in children. It will describe the components of SDF and their actions at the tooth surface, as well as the results of clinical studies overseas. The indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages will be discussed, followed by clinical techniques. Some examples of SDF use in children will be shared.

Dr Callum Durwood BDS, BSc, MDSc (Melb), FRACDS, DComH (Lincoln), MPH (UNC), FADI, FICD

Callum Durward graduated from the University of Otago in 1981. Later he gained a MDSc in “Childrens and Preventive Dentistry” from the University of Melbourne, and a MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the 1980s he spent several years working in refugee camps in Thailand and Malaysia, and in the early 1990s he worked in Cambodia for an NGO at the national dental school, helping to develop dental services and education. During 2001-2003 Callum spent 6 months in East Timor as the Oral Health Promotion Advisor for the Australia-East Timor National Oral Health Project. Callum has also been a Senior Lecturer in NZ at the University of Otago and AUT University, Principal Dental Officer for the Otago District Health Board, and a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry for the Auckland District Health Board. Before returning to NZ in 2024 he was Dean of 2 dental schools in Cambodia for 16 years. Callum has used SDF for many years in Cambodia

Dr Abbey Corbett BDS, DClinDent (Paeds), MRACDS (Paeds)

Abbey Corbett obtained both her Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry (Paediatric Dentistry) from the University of Otago. On graduating from her specialist training in 2018, Abbey returned to work as a Specialist Paediatric Dentist at the Hospital Dental Service at Christchurch Hospital where her dental career first began as a House Surgeon in 2012. Abbey has been the co-chair of the Silver Diamine Fluoride in Aotearoa Collaboration alongside Dr Juliet Gray. Outside her role with Te Whatu Ora, Abbey is the recent past President for the New Zealand branch of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry (ANZSPD) and Mum to Natalie and Harriet.
