Oral sedation has long been a cornerstone of dental practice, offering a non-invasive method to alleviate anxiety and facilitate treatment for patients with dental phobia or special needs. However, the landscape of oral sedation is evolving, with growing concerns about its safety, efficacy, and appropriate use. One of the primary concerns with oral sedation is the inherent variability in patient responses, making it difficult to predict the optimal dose and increasing the risk of under-sedation or over-sedation.

This talk delves into the complexities of oral sedation, exploring its challenges, the reasons for a gradual shift away from its routine use, and the potential future of this technique in dentistry. By prioritizing patient safety, enhancing education and training, and aligning guidelines with international standards, the dental community in New Zealand can ensure that oral sedation remains a viable option for appropriate patients while minimizing the potential for adverse events.
