Patients present with seemingly a bewildering range of diseases and disorders of the oral cavity and indeed the stomatognathic system, that is the TMJ’s, salivary glands, muscles, nerves and the lips. This course with Associate Professor Mark Schifter, aims to provide a straightforward approach to recognition and diagnosis of significant oral pathologies such as oral cancer and potentially malignant oral disorders, painful oral conditions and an approach and guidance to complex oro-facial pain.

Associate Professor Mark Schifter

Mark Schifter is an A/Professor in Oral Medicine School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney. He obtained his specialist qualifications in Oral Medicine, also from the University of Sydney in 1998. Mark holds Memberships (by examination) in Special Needs Dentistry and Oral Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellowships in Oral Medicine (by examination) from the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FFD RCSI (Oral Med) and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS (Oral Med). Mark was the Head of Training of the specialist-training program in Oral Medicine of the Sydney Dental School, University of Sydney for over 18 years since 2005, having been in involved in the training of eleven of the current oral medicine specialists in NSW (except one). Mark is a Staff Specialist in Oral Medicine, Department of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Special Needs Dentistry at Westmead Hospital. He holds the following clinical appointments at Westmead: Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Department of Haematology; Oral Immunology Clinic; and the Head and Neck Cancer Clinic, Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre, Westmead Hospital. He has had over 20 years in specialist oral medicine practice and direct practical experience in the assessment and care of medically-complex patients, both in the out-patient and in-patient setting. Mark also holds appointments as a Consultant in Oral Medicine with the Skin Hospital (Darlinghurst), Pinnacle Dermatology, Orange, Orange Hospital Public Oral Health Unit, and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse (Head and Neck Cancer Clinic). Mark is also involved in the teaching of trainee Dermatologists, Haematologists, Immunologists and Head and Neck Surgeons. He was an Examiner for the Primaries of the RACDS, with a particular emphasis on clinical pharmacology for over 20 years. He has over 50 scientific publications, a contributor to the textbook, Burket’s Oral Medicine and on the editorial board of the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology and a reviewer for a number of journals, including the Australian Dental Journal.
