This mini-residency program is designed to help enhance clinical skills and knowledge to be directly applied into your practice. You will have time during each session to discuss your clinical cases with specialist prosthodontist Dr Mark Ma, as well as Periodontists Nick, James, and Poppy. This course is broken into 5 sessions over a 12-month period and will consist of a combination of lectures, case presentations and case discussions. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring your own case, It is good if we are treating these with you. Throughout the 12-month program participants will have ongoing online support with clinical questions. Session one: The aim of this session is assessing the restorative and periodontal prognosis to help with treatment planning. We will discuss how to identify straightforward cases, as well as more complex cases and how to avoid trouble. Participants will be advised on what information is required when case planning, and how to present. Session two: The aim of this session is introducing dental implants and periodontal treatment into your clinical practice; how and what to discuss with your patients. Communication with the patient, the lab, and the clinical team. Discussion about the failed tooth vs the failing tooth vs dental implants. Session three: This session compares conventional restorative and implant dentistry vs digital technologies. How these can be used to achieve optimal outcomes. This session looks at single and short span bridges. What surgical guidance is indicated (full guided, vs partial vs freehand – when and where). Restorative procedures, impression techniques and verification jigs. Abutment, materials and design. Session four: The aim of this session is how to plan for success – simple to advanced concepts. The importance of comprehensive treatment planning. This session looks at multi-implant, full arch concepts. We will introduce the management of complications (both biological and mechanical). Session five: The final session will include immediate implants and immediate temporisation. How and when this treatment option is indicated. As well, supportive periodontal therapy and peri-implant maintenance therapy for long-term success.
Dr. Nicholas Cole graduated BDS from the University of Otago in 1981. In 1986 he completed a MSc in Periodontology at the University of London. Following this he returned to New Zealand and worked in a group general practice with a special interest in periodontics. Starting in 1991 he did his first introductory implant course. Implants and periodontology became a significant focus of his general practice.
Dr. James Dawson graduated with his dental degree from the University of Otago in 2009. After undertaking a position as a dental house officer in Auckland, he worked in private practice in Newcastle, Australia. He returned to New Zealand in 2014 to undertake his Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry and gain specialist registration as a Periodontist. James’ doctoral research was in the use of diode lasers for the management of dental implant surface decontamination. Whilst in Dunedin, James was involved in the undergraduate dentistry teaching program, and he also provides continuing education to dentists both in New Zealand and Australia. James works in specialist practice in Auckland, is actively involved in the profession, and is on the executive committee of the New Zealand Periodontal Society.
Dr Poppy Horne graduated BDS (Distinction) from the University of Otago in 2010. She then worked at Auckland District Health Board and in private practice before returning to Otago in 2016 to undertake her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontics. Poppy has been the recipient of more than fifteen awards and scholarships in dentistry. She has published several papers in the international dental literature and has been involved in the clinical teaching of dental students at the University of Otago. Poppy’s doctoral research topic investigated patients’ experiences during their diagnosis and treatment for periodontal disease. The insight gained from her research has been invaluable in understanding patients’ perceptions and expectations of periodontal treatment. Poppy is passionate about improving the experiences and clinical outcomes for her patients as they undergo periodontal and implant treatment.
Dr Mark Ma (Prosthodontist) graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago in 2016 and worked in private practice before completing the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) at the University of Melbourne. His thesis involved a literature review and the development of a novel instrument-based assessment tool for sleep bruxism. Although Mark is passionate about all aspects of prosthodontics, his special interests are in removable prosthodontics, fixed removable prosthodontics (conventional and implant based) and the management of orofacial pain.
