Presenters will talk through the practicalities of treating patients for oral surgery procedures, and in this three part series will share their experience and top tips for success. They will cover pre-op assessment, intra-operative challenges and the post operative issues and sequelae that can be challenging. Part 1: Planning for success The pre-operative assessment stage is an integral part in any successful dental procedure, including oral surgery. It is the time to identify possible issues and set expectations. Learn more about how to gather all the relevant information to guide your oral surgery appointments. Part 2: Intra-operative challenges Even with good planning, you have to be prepared for the unexpected and have tools to manage those situations as they happen. Learn more about potential complications, how to identify them, and then how to manage them during the treatment appointment Part 3: Post-operative management At times, problems only arise after the treatment has been completed. Efficiently diagnosing and managing any post-operative sequelae is an important aspect in part of any oral surgery procedure. Abi Estelle, Brenton (BJ) Wilson, and Nabeela Ahmed

Abi Estelle: Abi is a British and American trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. During her medical degree in London, she first encountered maxillofacial surgery onboard Mercy Ships in Sierra Leone. Inspired, she completed her medical degree before returning to the Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ University to study dentistry. Throughout this time Abi continued to volunteer overseas. She has visited over 50 countries and provided medical care in 5 continents. Completing dentistry Abi moved to Jacksonville, Florida to undertake 5 years oral and maxillofacial specialty training. Jacksonville is renowned for its breadth of max-fac training which boasts a strong Head and Neck cancer centre, a cleft and craniofacial team, level 1 trauma as well as orthognathic, TMJ, cosmetic and dentoalveolar surgery. She practices the full breadth of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Tauranga. Brenton (BJ) Wilson: Brenton grew up on North Stradbroke Island, off the coast of Brisbane. He completed his medical degree in far north Queensland at James Cook University, before working in the Northern Territory and South Australia. He then completed his dental degree back at James Cook University. He completed his specialist maxillofacial training in New Zealand and worked in the Christchurch, Dunedin, Waikato and Auckland training units. During his training, he received the medals for highest score in the RACDS SST and final fellowship exams. In addition to surgery, BJ has taught anatomy for 4 years to dentists sitting the primary exams. Drawn back to the coast, he is starting specialist practice at Tauranga OMS in 2024, where he will practice the breadth of general scope maxillofacial surgery. Nabeela Ahmed: Nabeela is a UK trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. She completed her dental degree in 1999 and medical degree in 2006. Her maxillofacial training was across several major teaching hospitals in the UK including three major trauma centres. She obtained her certificate of completion for her maxillofacial training in February 2019 and then undertook a prolonged (by COVID) fellowship in Darwin, Australia and Hamilton, NZ. She is on the UK specialist list for both Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Surgery. She has been working as a maxillofacial consultant in the UK where she was a dental trainee supervisor. Alongside her clinical practice she enjoys teaching and has a Masters in Medical Education. Her clinical interest is in traumatic and acquired deformity of the face and skin cancer. Her practice base will be Tauranga Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (TOMS).
