Updated Codes of Practice [July 2019]

Approved at the July Board meeting, these below updated Codes of Practice can be found under Standards & Guidelines.

NZDA Code of Practice: Sedation for dental procedures

Note the requirement from 1 October 2019 for both minimal and moderate sedation, that the person monitoring the patient (including non-registered team members) has completed a formal education and training programme and for capnography to be used to monitor when providing an intended level of moderate sedation.

Also, that requirements apply when a practitioner proceeds with treatment knowing that a patient has self-administered a sedative drug(s), even if not prescribed or recommended by the practitioner.

NZDA Practice Guideline: Adult Protection

Provides information to assist with identifying and acting in situations where vulnerable adults may be suffering from some form of abuse.

Radiation Safety

In addition to the Code of Practice for Dental Radiology: ORS C4, there is also the Code of Practice for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology: ORS C1, which applies to the dental use of cone beam computed tomography equipment.

These documents can be accessed from our members section of the NZDA website, under Standards & Guidelines.

Dental practitioners have an obligation under the Radiation Safety Act 2016 Act to comply with these Codes.
